Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Tyendinaga Township take their name from the great Mohawk leader and British military officer Thayendanegea, known to many as Joseph Brant. After the American Revolution, a group of Mohawk families were led by Captain John Deserontyon from their Mohawk Valley settlements in New York State to the shores of the Bay of Quinte. The British had granted lands to the Mohawks in recognition of their service during the Revolutionary War.
